A Jam Sponge is a natural sea sponge that you can use instead of a tampon.

Women have used sponges as tampons for years but a Jam Sponge has attitude!

Sponges live on the bottom of the Mediterranean Ocean, where they are picked individually so that the ocean beds continue to restock themselves. The divers who collect the sponges are careful to ensure that the roots of the sponge remain intact so as the sponge can regenerate. They have been farming sponges for generations and if they over harvest them they will lose their livelihood. The sponges need clean sea waters to live otherwise they will die. Their existence is a proof that the water around them is not polluted. 

Traditional tampons take about 6 months to biodegrade and block up our plumbing systems. Health wise, the bleaches used in tampons have links with cervical cancer and they are responsible for Toxic Shock Syndrome. A traditional tampon is not sterile, just because something is in a plastic wrapper does not mean it is sterile. The Jam Sponge is not sterile but the vagina has a natural way of keeping itself clean.

With care a Jam Sponge can last a year. Eventually your Jam Sponge will lose some of its bounce and become less absorbent, that is when it is time to say goodbye to it.

Unlike conventional tampons a Jam Sponge is completely biodegradable, so when it has done it's best for you it can be composted.
