Buyers Guide to Menstrual Cups Menstrual Cups are an alternative to tampons. Menstrual cups are made from latex, plastic or silicone and are inserted into the vagina to "catch" menstrual blood rather than absorb it. The cup will hold enough blood for a full day without emptying, unless your flow is very heavy. The risk of contracting Toxic Shock Syndrome is minimal as the cups do not absorb fluid from the vagina, as tampons do. How to choose the right size? It’s a personal thing! Some women try several brands before settling on the “right” size. The ages mentioned by the manufacturers are only to be used as a guide. Femmecup is the only cup that comes in one size. The general rule with the other cups is that size 1 is the smallest size and size 2 is the largest. The Mooncup is different and Size A is the larger size. A for After Childbirth, B for Before Childbirth. Generally, if you have had children then you should be looking at the larger size, unless they were born by caesarean section in which case the vagina would still be as if you hadn’t had children and you may need the smaller size, depending on your age! I know it is confusing. Please bear in mind that due to the personal nature of these products, if you buy one and it doesn’t fit you cannot return it!!
